Builders, local authorities and other organisations working together to help breathe new life into deprived or depressed areas is helping to make a major difference to cities and towns across the North-East.

And the Best Partnership Category of The Journal/Evening Gazette 21st Century Living Awards, is a chance for some of the best schemes to showcase their achievements.

Over the next few weeks homemaker is featuring entries into the awards, sponsored by Grange Interiors.

The awards will be announced at a black tie awards dinner on Friday, May 4 at the Newcastle Gosforth Marriott.

This week homemaker features a random selection from the Best Partnership category:

Cleadon Park, South Tyneside

WORKING in partnership with South Tyneside Council, Enterprise 5, The Housing Corporation, TEN, Ridgeway Primary School and local residents, Bellway Homes is transforming Cleadon Park in South Tyneside's largest regeneration project.

The key challenge for the partners was to begin a large-scale redevelopment on an existing estate, which was substantially occupied.

Close co-operation was imperative between the parties to ensure that areas were targeted for clearance to allow construction of new property and re-population of the estate at the earliest opportunity with the minimum of inconvenience to residents.

With funding from The Housing Corporation and working with Enterprise 5, which has now merged with Nomad Housing Group as NomadE5, 32% of the redevelopment housing stock will be rented housing, with a further 6% being low cost housing for sale.

Environment secretary David Milliband, MP for South Tyneside, visited the development twice and showed great interest in the eco-friendly nature of the scheme.

A major element of the partnership was the collaboration over community facilities, with independent architects being engaged to deliver various facilities, including a medical centre, dentist and library. …
