Flats Fire Kills British Mother and Daughters on Paris Tourist Trip

A BRITISH mother and her two daughters have died in a blaze in a 300-year-old apartment building in Paris.

Their bodies were recovered from the "death trap" fifth-floor f lat after the fire early on Saturday.

A fire service spokesman said the women would have had "virtually no chance" of escaping once the blaze took hold inside the wood-beamed apartment, which had no fire escape.

Police said the victims were believed to be a British woman and her two daughters in Paris for a sightseeing weekend.

The fire is thought to have started in a gas boiler supplying a pizza restaurant at street level, sending flames shooting up lead pipes to the flats above, gutting the fifth and sixth floors of the building.

More than 180 firefighters battled for six hours before bringing the blaze under control at about 8am on Saturday. Seven other people in neighbouring flats in the Les Halles shopping district were treated for smoke inhalation and two firemen were injured. …
