Metronet 'Must Pay [Pounds Sterling]750 Million for Tube Delays'

THE consortium maintaining the Tube network should pay up to [pounds sterling]750 million for failing to finish work on time, an influential report says today.

Metronet has come under fire for late-running engineering and maintenance works at night which have resulted in major delays for commuters in the morning rush hour.

Last year, under the complex public-private partnership (PPP) contracts governing maintenance work on the Tube, it was suggested that London Underground may have to pay part of the bills.

This would mean putting up the fares - effectively making passengers pay for the delays.

But PPP arbiter Chris Bolt's review of the deal says responsibility rests with the company.

Mr Bolt was asked to produce a report after a scathing assessment of Metronet's performance.
