Struggling Spartans Are on the Wrong Track

Blyth Spartans suffered a setback at lowly Leigh RMI last night when they slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Lancashire, (writes Jeff Bowron).

The Railwaymen, fourth bottom of the Conference North, boosted their survival hopes with two second-half goals after a 40th-minute Richard Forster penalty had pulled Blyth level.

An unchanged Spartans, however, were unable to continue their recent revival and paid the price for defensive errors at Hilton Park.

The team coach lost its way on the way to Leigh and the Spartans only arrived 20 minutes before kick-off and had little time for preparation.

Manager Harry Dunn, however, offered no excuses for a disappointing display.

He said: "It was not the ideal build-up but Leigh were better than us in every department and it was a bad day at the office.

"They had too much energy for us and we missed good chances with the score at 1-1 and paid the price.

"We were uncharacteristically bad defensively and I was bitterly disappointed with the display against a poor Leigh side. …
