JULIO BAPTISTA heads into tonight's clash with Aston Villa knowing he must improve his performance if he is to win a permanent deal.

The Brazlian, nicknamed "The Beast", is on loan from Real Madrid and has expressed a wish to remain with Arsenal. Manager Arsene Wenger insists there is more to come from the midfielder but wants to see a return to the form which saw him score goals in the Carling Cup.

Wenger said: "If everything could be agreed there is a good chance he will stay. I like him as a player and I think there is still a lot to come."

Asked about Baptista's future yesterday, he said: "There has been no decision." More consistency might help that decision, however, with Wenger adding: "He hasn't completely adapted to the pace of the game because sometimes he looks to give the ball too late. But he always creates chances and that is positive. He is frustrating sometimes but generally his efficiency is good. …
