Airbus workers in France, Germany and Spain launched protests today against plans for 10,000 job cuts. They are also protesting at the sale of six factories as Airbus attempts to stave off losses after delays to the A380 superjumbo.

GlaxoSmithKline received a blow today after research showed adding its top-selling drug Advair to Pfizer's Spiriva did not prevent worsening of the condition known as smoker's lung. Advair recently failed in a bigger study of smoker's lung patients.

Profits at scaffolding supplier Cape were boosted last year by strong demand from Saudi Arabian oil and chemicals plants. They rose from breakeven a year earlier to [pounds sterling]11.3 million. Clients include Exxon Mobil and Drax.

UBS has repeated its buy rating and 160p target price on Aegis in the wake of yesterday's full-year results. The broker was encouraged by the media buyer's performance, but sees little scope for upgrades.

Tesco, already the second-biggest supermarkets player in Malaysia, is planning a [pounds sterling]95.5 million expansion that would help it challenge the market leader. It has 6.7% of the country's market, while leader Giant has 8.6%.

Bridgewell and Teather & Greenwood have repeated buy ratings on Soco International following last year's 34% jump in profits. The Vietnamese oil explorer has potential reserves in the region of 2.5 billion barrels.

Friends Provident has been downgraded from outperform to peer perform by Bear Stearns. The life assurer has done poorly on value creation and is ranked 12th out of 13 of the companies the broker covers.

US house prices could tumble 10%, plunging the country's economy into recession, Merrill Lynch has warned. Interest rates must be cut to avoid such a series of events, which would culminate in a 30% fall in the US stock market, it said.
