The title and promotion race continues to be wide open in the Second Division and even Cullercoats, in seventh place, are still in with a shout.

But last weekend the Seasiders had their long unbeaten run terminated by powerful hosts Wallsend Town. A single goal scored in the 12th minute by Wallsend's Chris Johnson settled the issue.

Jesmond also had a one-goal success at home to Newcastle BT to keep themselves in pole position.

Jack Charlton scored the winner straight after the break and Graham Batty should have doubled the lead almost immediately but failed with his spot-kick.

Despite being at the head of the table Jesmond are looking anxiously over their shoulders at nearest rivals Stocksfield, Wallsend Town, Whitley Bay Town and Westerhope.

And the only one of these to slip up last Saturday was Whitley Bay Town. They were beaten 2-0 at home by Red Row Welfare, whose marksmen were Ron Warwick and Michael Freathy.

Westerhope extended an unbeaten run into double figures with a 4-2 victory at Lowick which also completed a league double. …
