Noted Jazz Pianist Joins JU Jazz Profs in Concert

Jackonville Unveristy just may have the keys to spring.

Keyboard great Kevin Bales will join John Ricci, director of Jazz Studies at JU, and other faculty members for an evening of jazz at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, in Terry Concert Hall.

The Atlanta-based jazz pianist is regarded as somewhat of a local celebrity, having taught 11 years at the University of North Florida, and is currently an instructor of music at Georgia State University.

Bales won the 1994 American Pianist Association's Jazz Piano Competition and for the past 15 years has been an integral part of the Southeast jazz scene.

Performing at top jazz clubs and festivals across the United States and around the world, Bales' notable performances include the JVC Jazz Festival in New York, The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, Yoshi's in San Francisco, the Toronto Jazz Festival, and the Hampton Jazz Festival in England.

He's toured and performed with jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Louie Bellson, Blue Note recording artist Marcus Printup, Grammy winner Eddie Daniels, sax legends Bunky Green, James Moody, Ben Tucker, Nathan Page, Ira Sullivan, the Lincoln Center All-Stars and others. …
