HEALTH DEPARTMENT, HUD HOST HOME SAFETY EVENT

The Duval County Health Department will co-host an event beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday at Shands Jacksonville hospital to raise awareness about health and hazards in the home.

The event is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's "Healthy Homes for Healthy Kids" campaign.

As part of the free event, a 2,500-square-foot model home will be set up to educate and raise awareness about safe use, storage and disposal of pesticides and about health hazards associated with pesticide use.

The model home, which will be open for 10- to 12-minute tours throughout the day, will be in front of the hospital's Eighth Street entrance.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR CITY EVENTS

Jacksonville Beach is looking for volunteers to help at city events throughout the year.

Volunteers must be 18 and are needed to provide information and also to help with setting up for events.

Although volunteers do not have to live in Jacksonville Beach, organizers said a knowledge of the area is helpful.

There will be an organizational meeting at Jacksonville Beach City Hall at 11 Third St. N. at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31.

PAINTING OF DAMES POINT WILL CAUSE LANE CLOSURES

Lane closings are scheduled to start Monday in preparation for repainting of the Dames Point bridge.

The southbound right lane will be closed for about half the length of the bridge near the peak of the river crossing during the first phase. The lane closings are needed because of equipment and scaffolds required to remove old paint and to repaint the bridge.

The $11 million project will last nearly two years. …
