Man's Savage Beating over a Pounds 10 Debt

A man was savagely beaten and left in a pool of blood over a pounds 10 debt, a court heard yesterday.

Brian Richardson was attacked in his home by Steven Eglintine, who punched and kicked him, before using a stool to beat him.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 21-year-old, of Hathersage Gardens, had been paid pounds 20 by Kevin Martin ( his fiance's uncle ( to carry out the vicious attack on May 28 last year.

Martin had ordered the assault after Mr Richardson had refused to pay him pounds 10 for some work he had carried out at a door in his flat, insisting the work was sub-standard.

In retaliation, Martin, 46, of Dean Road in South Shields, had broken his window, but still not content he had also paid Eglintine to "slap him round a bit".

But when a drunken Eglintine had turned up at the 50-year-old's flat he launched a sustained assault. Stephen Duffield, prosecuting, said: "He was punched to the ground, then he looked up to see Eglintine had a bat or stick of some kind which he used to beat him. …
