Trade Boost as NECC Links with World's Richest City

Trade between the North-East and the Middle East may rise after a regional business membership organisation yesterday (Sun) opened up new links with the world's richest city.

The North East Chamber of Commerce has forged an alliance with its counterparts at the Chamber in Abu Dhabi to capitalise on an explosion of trade in the federal capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce has committed to bringing a delegation over to Durham in May, while the NECC is going to put in place support facilities for its 820-plus members that are already exporting over there.

The news comes after Emirates Airlines announced it plans to launch direct flights from Newcastle to Dubai in September.

NECC chief executive James Ramsbotham said: "The Middle East is increasingly becoming a target for companies looking to expand into global markets and Abu Dhabi is pressing to become the hub of all that activity.

"Despite the obvious differences, there are tremendous similarities between our two regions. …
