Share Your Passion

Article excerpt

As many a North-East in-comer will tell you, there is only one thing better than discovering the many pleasures of the region for yourself. That is introducing them to friends and relatives. People who came to visit me in Newcastle after I first moved here in the early 1980s used to be in for an invigorating time. But all were willing visitors to Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Water, Durham Cathedral and the beaches of Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and Bamburgh.

The National Trust gems of Wallington and Cragside were popular destinations, as were Belsay and the Bowes Museum. I even used to take people down to Newcastle Quayside before it had had its millions spent on it. Even then the place had its raffish charms.

The in-comer (originally from Dover) who did the honours for me put Lindisfarne, the still infant Beamish and the waterfowl park at Washington on the itinerary and evidently enjoyed the experience just as much as I did. A boat trip to the Farne Islands was better than anything I had experienced abroad.

The pleasure increases over time. The footsore friends who, 20 years ago, braved the wind on Hadrian's Wall now take pleasure in a trip to Sunderland's National Glass Centre, Baltic or The Sage Gateshead.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge and The Angel of the North are always winners, as is The Alnwick Garden. Now Woodhorn and Seven Stories await future guests, and maybe we'll venture to mima, Middlesbrough's stunning new art gallery.

There is simply so much to see in this part of the world, and so much that isn't replicated anywhere else.

People who have lived all their lives in the region can usually be sure that family members heading into exile will soon return for a visit.

With a new campaign called Share Your Passion, regional development agency One NorthEast is encouraging us all to be a bit more proactive on this front. …
