Man, That Was a Late Show as Toon Steal the Points!

Newcastle United left it late before running out 2-1 Northern Premier League winners at Manchester City with another never-say-die performance.

In a game that was always going to be a close contest, Newcastle took the lead when, following good combination play between twin strikers Michaela Newton and Melanie Reay, Reay turned her marker to allow Ruth Sutcliffe to open the scoring on 23 minutes.

Sutcliffe found herself in a similar position five minutes later but was thwarted by a brave save from Rebecca Brown in the City goal.

The home side's pressure finally paid off early in the second half when captain Lindsay Savage equalised from the penalty spot.

The Magpies, however, weathered the storm and Sutcliffe ran on to Lindsay McCubbin's pass on 85 minutes ( only to waste a good opportunity by putting her cross behind the City goal.

In the final minute, excellent play down the right flank allowed Reay to go beyond her marker and commit the City goalkeeper before rolling the ball into the path of Newton, who made no mistake from eight yards. …
