Toon director Bruce Shepherd today told how nearly two years of meticulous work has gone into the club's pounds 300m expansion plans.

The Newcastle United chief said the club has been working closely with Newcastle City Council bosses throughout that time on the exciting new plans which will create 1,500 jobs. Mr Shepherd said: "This new development is the result of at least 18 months' planning.

"We have worked, and are continuing to work, very closely with the planners at the civic centre to ensure the best possible outcome for the city of Newcastle.

"We are working on a vision for this area of the city.

"This includes working closely with those involved in the development of Science City of the old brewery site. We want our project to complement the others."

United's latest plans involving extending St James' Park to at least 60,000 capacity as well as building two hotels, a conference centre, apartments and offices.
