More than 100 of Britain's best riders took to the road for the Northumbrian Water-backed Tour of the Reservoir on Derwentside.

Rapha Condor's Dean Downing edged out Gordon McCauley (Plowman Craven Evans Cycles) with Robin Sharman (KFS Special Vehicles/Sunday Bicycles) in third place.

Twenty riders broke clear after the completion of lap two ( and many of the chasers were gasping for breath as the Plowmans Craven team upped the tempo, causing some 40 riders to retire.

The lead group of Downing, Jason McIntyre (Scotland), Robin Sharman (KFS Special Vehicles/Sunday Bicycles) and Greg Roche (KFS Special Vehicles) relentlessly pushed ahead, with North East riders Steve Kenny and Steven Ward from VC Azzurri happy to trundle along in the chasing group of 50 riders.

Ward finished a creditable 33rd and Kenny 48th, 4.5 minutes behind the winner.
