By taking simple measures to protect your vehicle, car crime can be prevented with most of these measures being both quick and cheap to put in place.

Try to park somewhere safe, especially within the boundaries of your own property.

While at home try to park in a secure garage, or consider installing security lights in the area where you leave your vehicle.

Try wherever possible to park in an Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) secure car park, or in a well lit area.

Wherever possible try and implement security devices, such as car alarms, immobilisers and wheel locks. For a cheaper alternative to wheel locks, locking wheel nuts are cheap and easy to install.

Do not leave anything in your car as it invites criminals to target your vehicle. Stereos and CD players are the most common items taken, so remove items such as front plates if possible. Consider installing a security code to your stereo as this prevents it from being used again. …
