There's testosterone and macho swagger in extremis in Shooter, Antoine Fuqua's pumped-up action thriller based on the book Point of Impact by Washington Post film critic Stephen Hunter.

Best described as the backwoods cousin of Rambo and The Bourne Identity, Fuqua's film delivers explosions and bone-crunching violence with furious abandon, depicting a US government riddled with corruption and infighting.

As an edge-of-seat romp, this is rollicking fun, justifying the central character's rampage as bloodthirsty revenge for the death of a dear friend: "I don't think you understand: these men shot my dog!"

Action sequences are directed with brio, including a tense, high-speed car chase and overblown shoot-outs, replete with the bad guys exploding in suitably gory fashion. …
