Imposing Falcons flanker Mike McCarthy will rejoin Irish side Connacht at the end of the season, (writes Nick Purewal).

Former England Under-21 McCarthy has been an integral member of the first-team squad since joining from the Irish province in 2004.

But this season the Irish-qualified forward has found the going tough at Kingston Park under the Fletcher regime, starting just seven games.

While there had been interest from other clubs, McCarthy opted for Connacht in a bid to find a regular starting spot.

The versatile 25-year-old has also featured at second-row for the Falcons, and is a physical ball-carrier.

But the rapid rise of Ben Woods, the form of Geoff Parling and emergence of Eni Gesinde have left McCarthy short of game time.

Even at lock, Jason Oakes, Andy Perry and Mark Sorenson have tied things up, so a move had looked increasingly likely as the campaign wore on.
