Death In Venice

BBC2, 12.05am (1971) .....

AN AVANT-GARDE composer moves to a Venetian resort to escape his stressful life. But he soon becomes infatuated with a young boy who is holidaying at the resort with his family.

As this relationship blossoms, a deadly disease strikes the resort and threatens both man and boy physically. Based on the Thomas Mann novel and starring Dirk Bogarde, above.

ROBERT CARLYLE and Guy Pearce, pictured, star in this bizarre film with few redeemable characters. There's the cowardly commanding officer, the drugaddicted cook, the drunken soldier... oh, and the small matter of an expedition's lone survivor who admits to eating human flesh to stay alive.

All sounds a bit weird?

Well, it is, and one gets the impression that it's on the brink of being a comedy.
