An attempted armed robbery was foiled by a brave shopkeeper who faced up to the thug when he stormed into his workplace.

The man was wielding a table leg when he walked into the Lowfield Estate Post Office in Teesville about 7.30pm on Saturday.

Shop manager Ray Bennett, 54, challenged the raider, who had already started to smash the shop's till and terrify a female shop worker.

Mr Bennett grabbed a baseball bat and faced up to the robber, who then fled the scene.

The shop manager said: "I was doing a stock take and the shop worker was over near the door.

"I heard her scream and she ran over here and the man came in with what I thought was a baseball bat.

"He smashed a cabinet and then started hitting the till. I grabbed a bat that I keep behind the counter and he ran away. There was another man with him who stood at the door. …
