Sea of Souls 9pm, BBC1

The paranormal drama returns and not only has it morphed from a Saturday-night series into a two-parter, but Professor Monaghan's assistants seem to have disappeared. Oooh, spooky.

You remember the form: parapsychology boffin Prof M (Bill Paterson, right) is frequently tempted away from his patchily funded university post by ghostly happenings.

Said occurrences are usually as subtle as a flashing neon sign saying "spooks ahead", making your average Hammer Horror look understated, but we can forgive Sea of Souls these sometimes hilarious scenes because the over-the-top plots sit neatly alongside the determined ordinariness of Monaghan.

Tonight, Ian and Karen, a couple in turmoil after the loss of their son, decide to move to Scotland and renovate a deserted manor house. (Haven't they seen Scooby Doo? Don't they know that in derelict buildings, ghouls abound?) However, strange noises emerge from the radio and bizarre daubings are discovered on the walls and under the carpets..

Into the midst of Karen's escalating spook-induced hysteria strolls Prof M, who experiences his own visions, perhaps linked to the house's past.

The whole thing is wilfully bonkers, but somehow Paterson manages to hold proceedings together. It winds up on Thursday, if you can bear the tension..

Horizon 9pm, BBC2

Intelligence is traditionally measured using IQ tests, but do they really assess how bright someone is? Psychologists tend to disagree, so this edition of the science programme takes seven high-fliers in their own fields (including top chess bod Susan Polgar, below) and subjects them to tests of creativity and logic, as well as looking for evidence of intelligence in their genes and upbringing.

For example, could a truly intelligent person come up with 100 uses for a sock?
