New twist in legal dispute

A BUSINESSMAN locked in a legal battle with the developers of Middlehaven has been ordered to pay pounds 54,000 in court costs.

Marton-born Simon Brown, owner of Chilli Developments, is attempting to sue the landowner and developer of the Middlehaven site in Middlesbrough for almost pounds 10m.

He lodged a High Court writ after his plans to develop flats on the site fell through and he blames Tees Valley Regeneration (TVR) and English Partnerships (EP).

Mr Brown says he spent three years and thousands of pounds preparing plans but claims senior officials from EP and TVR discredited him in front of financial backers which led to the collapse of his bid.

The legal case took another twist last month when EP and TVR filed their own papers demanding Chilli pay pounds 325,000 to the court to prove it had the funds should it lose the case.

They also requested Chilli pay outstanding costs of pounds 12,000 from a previous court case last July. …
