Superfit fundraisers at a Newcastle gym will be going the distance for The Journal 175 St Oswald's Appeal.

Staff and members at Impulse Fitness at Gosforth Pool, Regent Centre, will be taking part in a month long challenge to cover 175 kilometres by any means necessary ( on a running machine, exercise bike or cross trainer.

Each entrant will have to complete the distance in a different time, depending on their ability, and will be able to raise money for St Oswald's Hospice by receiving sponsorship from friends and family for every kilometre they complete.

The gym, run by Newcastle City Council, came up with the idea after reading about The Journal's plan to celebrate our 175th anniversary on May 12 with a special appeal on behalf of St Oswald's.

Impulse Fitness gym supervisor Susan Lant,[correct] 51, who lives in Gosforth, said: "We've already got several members of staff and customers signed up and hope to get many more people involved before June. We've had a great response so far.

"The challenge will have three difficulty levels for people of all ages and abilities.

"Those who consider themselves to be advanced will have one week to complete 175km, intermediate fitness enthusiasts will have two weeks and beginners will have a month. We hope to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause."

The mother-of-two said she hoped the challenge would receive as good a response as she got when she raised money for a children's heart charity after her father died while training for the Great North Run.

She said: "He was going to run for the children's heart unit and when he died everyone who was going to sponsor him just sent cheques through to me for the charity. It was amazing.

"So, even if people do not want to take part in the challenge itself they are welcome to send cheques to the gym for St Oswald's. …
