England are confident that they will quickly find the right man to replace Duncan Fletcher.

Fletcher's untenable position as coach was settled when England revealed he had resigned after a winter which included desperate performances in the ICC Champions Trophy and World Cup, and a 5-0 Ashes series whitewash.

His last match will be tomorrow's final game of the World Cup against West Indies and by then England hope to be well on the way to establishing his successor, at least on a temporary basis.

England and Wales Cricket Board academy director Peter Moores is being considered as a temporary appointment and he may become the full-time successor if England are unable to tempt Tom Moody away from the clutches of a lucrative offer from Western Australia.

"I hope that within the next 48 hours we have appointed someone as a caretaker-coach and there is a possibility that we may appoint quite quickly Duncan Fletcher's permanent successor," explained David Morgan, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The England management board do not have time on their side to find a permanent successor, which should strengthen Moores' case, as the Test series against West Indies starts at Lord's on May 17.

"The likelihood is that the person who will be appointed will come in on a temporary basis but I don't rule out the possibility that we could, before the start of the West Indies series, have confirmed a permanent appointment," added Morgan.

"I would have thought June or July would be the latest time we would appoint Duncan's permanent replacement."

West Indies legend Brian Lara has announced he will retire from all international cricket after tomorrow's World Cup match against England.

Lara captained the Windies in their unsuccessful bid to win the World Cup in the Caribbean and while his retirement from the one-day game was expected, his decision to stand down from Test cricket is a surprise. …
