Music and fun as crowds celebrate England's patron

BY George - this lot made a song and dance about our patron saint.

Performers from all over the world celebrated St George's Day with traditional instruments from their own countries.

A weekend event at Saltwell Park, Gateshead, was all about fun as families were entertained by small concerts, magicians, crafts and storytelling.

La Bande Europa, a group of 35 folk musicians from Europe, gave their first performance, and folk artists, including the hurdy gurdy performer Pascal Lefeuvre, trombonist John Kenny, bass clarinetist Dick Lea, and Scottish composer Jim Sutherland entertained crowds.

Mr Sutherland said: "I come from the North of Scotland and I'm celebrating the patron saint of England with a performance by international musicians."

Carol McKinley was at the event with twin daughters Sarah and Kay, 11.
