Deep Purple, Metro Radio Arena

I was anticipating the Deep Purple gig at the arena as a rock gig I could go to and not feel like the oldest person in the room. And this was certainly the case.

We arrived about 8.30pm hoping to see Thin Lizzy, wondering what they could be like without Phil Lynott. However, we had already missed this and a fine Spinal-Tap-of-a-display from Styx was in full force.

Synchronised marching forward with guitars and rolling wave actions mid riff were very entertaining if a bit cheesy.

This all made me a bit anxious for the gig to follow, this kind of 80s soft rock wasn't what I was expecting. However, the fans were loving it and the musicians were throwing bucketloads of memorabilia, including Polaroid pictures, into the cheering crowd. It was also refreshing to see a couple of lighters during the slow songs rather than just mobile phone lights.

When Deep Purple came on we were not disappointed. …
