A chef with a kind heart is tackling a 10k race to raise money for the kids he cooks for at a Teesside hospice.

Alan Gaunt, 40, from Norton, cooks meals for the patients and parents at the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton.

But he is swapping his whisk for a pair of running shoes to help raise money for the hospice at the Tees Barrage 10k race.

The run on May 7 already has 400 runners signed up but there is room for another 100 to join the race.

Alan did the Great North Run last year but said he was looking forward to tackling the scenic Tees Barrage race on Bank Holiday Monday.

He said: "Working at Butterwick Hospice has made me really appreciate how precious life can be.

"Catering for patients with life-limiting illnesses is a real challenge. The biggest compliment is when a patient with practically no appetite returns an empty dinner plate after not eating a full meal for days."

Last year he raised pounds 300 with his running and hopes to top that amount this year. …
