Time to Televise Meetings of County Commission

What do Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties have in common? All broadcast their County Commission meetings into homes, live, via Comcast cable TV.

But not Nassau County.

Nassau's meetings are shown in Yulee only - and then on a delayed basis.

That is in nobody's interest. The public should know how its business is being conducted, and commissioners need - hopefully want - as much informed input as they can get.

Controversial agendas usually draw a large crowd; there was standing room only during some of the hearings on whether to fire Administrator Mike Mahaney, for example.

But it isn't reasonable to expect people to drive from the far western reaches to Yulee for routine meetings.

The good news is that the commission wants its meetings televised.

Indeed, Mahaney was working on the project when terminated.

The bad news is that not much progress has been made since Mahaney left.

Daniel Salmon, director of facilities, says plans are being made to provide streaming video of meetings on the county's Web site. …
