SUNSHINE 15, 107 mins, dir Danny Boyle IT'S 2057, and the world's about to end because the sun is fizzling out, unless a spaceship can kick-start it by dropping a bomb the size of Manhattan into its centre. Naturally, it all goes wrong when Cillian Murphy's team takes a disastrous detour. But the premise is fantastic, borrowing from 2001: A Space Odyssey; and the colours are marvellous - even if director Danny Boyle stumbles on the last stretch.

CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER 15, 114 mins, dir Zhang Yimou ZHANG YIMOU'S sumptuous exploration of a plan by a 10th-century Chinese emperor (Chow Yun-Fat) to poison his rebellious empress (the lovely Gong Li) is long on eye candy but short on plot. A visual feast nonetheless.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS

15, 137 mins, dir Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck THIS astounding, Oscar-winning film follows playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), a charmer who has built a glorious career on knowing what not to say, write or even think in 1984 East Germany. But a Party official wants his lover and the secret police go to work to ruin him. Gripping.

WILD HOGS

12A, 100 mins, dir Walt Becker WHEN Woody (John Travolta) loses his wife and his job and has a midlife crisis, he hits the road with his weekend biker pals (William H Macy, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence). A vintage soundtrack and tight leather pants help the dumb fun along.

BLADES OF GLORY

12A, 93 mins, dir Josh Gordon/Will Speck THE nutters who gave the world Anchorman are back - and this time they're wearing ice skates. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder are champions whose enmity got them barred. The loophole is the doubles category - if the pair can swallow their mutual dislike and become the world's first male ice-skating duo. The script doesn't live up to this premise, despite Ben Stiller as producer, but it's still a lot of fun. …
