Pharmaceuticals group GlaxoSmithKline, which employs 2,200 people in Cumbria and County Durham, unveiled better than expected first-quarter profits despite increased US competition.

It posted pre-tax profits of pounds 2.14bn for the first three months of 2007, slightly below last year but ahead of analysts' forecasts of pounds 2.02bn.

PlayStation gives lively start

GAME Group said it had enjoyed a strong start to the year as gaming fans rushed to snap up the new Sony PlayStation 3.

The group said like-for-like sales had soared 44% in the 12 weeks to April 21. It also said it would open 80 international stores in the year ahead.

Pharmacy adds to biggest chain

THE UK's largest community pharmacy group Lloydspharmacy has increased its share of the sector with the addition of 63 shops.

Lloydspharmacy, owned by German company Celesio, two weeks ago acquired the Manichem chain of 29 in Berkshire, Dorset and Oxfordshire.
