One of Britain's most acclaimed young architects has been chosen as the designer of a ground-breaking arts project on Teesside.

Ian McChesney has been named as the designer selected to work with Middlesbrough Council on a project to improve the A66 corridor through the town.

The choice follows an international competition commissioned by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Mr McChesney, of McChesney Architects, was selected from a final shortlist of five practices.

He will work on designs to improve the look of the A66 corridor, starting from the Cargo Fleet transport interchange in the east.

It is envisaged the finished design will be exclusive to Middlesbrough and extend throughout the A66 corridor.

After presenting his initial ideas for the site, Mr McChesney will spend more time working with Middlesbrough Council on his proposal before the final design is chosen.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Mr McChesney's work has included the redevelopment of the Royal Academy of Music and award-winning designs for wind shelters for the South Shore Promenade in Blackpool. …
