The curtain comes down on the season today with three sides still in contention for the championship. It is a number of years since the destination of the title was still undecided on the final day but Billingham Town, Sunderland Nissan or Whitley Bay could be celebrating tonight.

Billingham Town, who have completed their programme, moved into pole position with a midweek victory, but are just a couple of points ahead of Nissan and three in front of Whitley Bay. Their rivals can both pip them since the Seasiders enjoy a better goals difference.

"Just a couple of weeks ago people were saying it was all over and that Whitley Bay would win but now we are in the driving seat," said Nissan manager Wilf Constantine.

"We know what needs to be done and quite simply if we defeat Billingham Synthonia at the Nissan Sports Complex this afternoon, nobody can catch us."

Nissan's only doubt is the injured Andy Reay but Constantine anticipates having a full squad.

Whitley Bay go to Durham City who have lost just one of their last 11.

"If you are a neutral then it is a fantastic end to the season," said Bay official Peter Fox who reported full-back Mark Taylor is definitely out.

"There have been twists and turns all along the way especially in recent weeks and who's to say there won't be another upset today. Hopefully, it will be in our favour,"

Stephen Harrison and Richard Pitt return to the Durham City squad.

At the bottom Bedlington Terriers host Horden CW and if, as expected, only one team is relegated, they are both safe.

"Just a month ago we looked dead and buried, but we have won four games on the bounce and are now third from the basement, a point in front of Horden," said Terriers official Dave Anderson. "James Harmison, Alex Lawson and Wayne Eastway are definitely out while John Watson is a major doubt. …
