A Tees Valley hotel has been honoured for its green credentials.

Gisborough Hall Hotel in Guisborough has won an award for its commitment to sound environmental practices, demonstrated in the way it runs its business.

As part of an in-depth assessment of the hotel's operations, the Green Tourism Business Scheme looked at a number of areas such as:

* Energy saving.

* Waste reduction.

* How they communicate environmental actions to customers.

* Purchasing policy - ensuring they use environmentally friendly goods and services.

* Transport - minimising visitors' car use by promoting public transport, cycle hire and walking options.

* The business' impact on wildlife - on site measures aimed at increasing biodiversity.

The hotel gained a new credit in every section of the strict criteria.

The 71-bedroomed four star country house manor hotel particularly impressed judges in the areas of energy saving and improved marketing and management with an eye to environmental issues.

Billy Stevenson, grading advisor at the Green Tourism Business Scheme, said: "There were a number of excellent points displayed at the hotels, such as the CHP and BEM systems - keycard systems for the rooms that ensure no power is used when the room is not occupied. …
