A fireman killed himself by dousing towels in petrol, standing on them and setting them ablaze outside his fire station, an inquest heard.

Heartbreakingly, he had previously said goodbye to his soldier son Ben who was going off to serve in Iraq.

But the devoted son had no idea that he was planning to take his own life, the inquest in Northallerton heard yesterday.

Michael Oakley, coroner for the Eastern District of North Yorkshire, heard local firefighter Timothy Tasane, 46, of Linden Road, Northallerton had been depressed because he believed his house was going to be repossessed.

He recorded a verdict that Mr Tasane killed himself.

Debra Pheasant, a fire control operator at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service control room at Northallerton Fire Station, said the incident happened on January 9 this year.

She said: "It was just before midnight when I heard a noise outside and shouting.

"I went to the window and saw a man standing there looking up at the window and I knew it was a firefighter. He was wearing his uniform.

"I shouted to him 'What are you doing? …
