Three scouts are heading to Malawi on a volunteer expedition with help from a grant.

Alan Selby, Matthew Iceton and Scott Dennison, of Nunthorpe Scouts, will be involved in work to rebuild Malawi's national scouts campsite.

The 18-year-olds, all Stokesley Sixth Form students, are due to set off in July for the five-week expedition with the help of a pounds 2,000 grant from Redcar and Cleveland Council's Youth Opportunity Fund.

Alan said: "We are really looking forward to it. It should be the opportunity of a lifetime."

The trio are among other groups who have benefited from pounds 178,265 handed out to 48 successful applicants.

Other grants included pounds 8,000 for Schwicked Drama Group, based at Redcar Youth Centre. The group will use its funding to write scripts and support packages to tour youth, community and Sure Start centres. The group, which formed last year, brings together 12 young people, some with special education needs. …
