While most five-year-olds have a carefree summer to look forward to, Ethan McElvaney has more on his mind.

The diabetic youngster has to have his blood sugar levels checked 10 times a day.

Ethan, from Teesville, has coped with his condition for three years and suffers from fits and needs to be constantly watched.

Now his mum Jacqui McKeown has started fundraising for a wonder machine that will help treat Ethan's condition by checking his blood supply 280 times a day.

It would also help doctors to monitor other Teesside youngsters with similar conditions.

The family first discovered Ethan had severe diabetes when he slipped into a short coma while they were on a holiday in Tenerife.

Since then he has had treatment at James Cook University Hospital although doctors said he has a "unique" case that needs constant monitoring.

His mum Jacqui and his aunt Tina McKeown, 47, are hoping to raise pounds 10,000 for two continuous glucose monitoring systems which check the blood supply 280 times a day. …
