Mark Lee has hung up his ice hockey boots for another season ( to stick in at his summer job.

The Newcastle Vipers' netminder has again swapped the rink for four months on the cricket field with league new boys Washington.

The teenager, highly-rated by the Vipers' hierarchy, has become a permanent fixture in the senior team on his native Wearside.

Club secretary Adrian Wood believes he can help Washington achieve their a top-five finish this season.

He said: "Mark has been with us through from the under-15 side and is a mainstay of the team now.

"He is a batsman who can bowl leg-spin if required and he will also be vice-captain.

"Mark is one of five lads aged 19 or under who will form the nucleus of our side this season.

"The youth aspect is very important to us, but we have experienced players in there to help.

"There is a good blend there and we are confident of a good season, even though we will be operating without a professional player. …
