Woman tried to grab robber

Thugs armed with baseball bats terrified staff during a raid on a Tyneside pub.

Police are searching for two balaclava-clad robbers, one just 5ft 2ins tall, who stormed into the Crofters Lodge, in Ponteland Road, Blakelaw, in broad daylight yesterday.

They rushed at a man and a woman who were emptying the fruit machines, demanding they hand over the cash.

One also grabbed the woman's handbag.

They then fled the scene but the woman ran after them, grabbing one of the men and attempting to wrestle him to the floor, but he managed to escape.

Crofter's Lodge assistant manager Lisa Hay said: "A taxi driver said he had seen two people hanging around in the car park just before it happened, but he didn't really think anything of it because we get a lot of people cutting through during the day.

"When they came in I was in the kitchen, one member of bar staff was in the cellar and the cleaner was in the bar with the fruit machine collectors. …
