The Avondale area has a new place with an old feel. Preservation Tap & Chophouse opened this week at 3951 St. Johns Ave.

Owned by Drew Cavins, co-owner of Mossfire Grill in Five Points, this place recognizes the neighborhood's history with black-and-white photos of area landmarks. Floors are made of small black-and-white tiles in the entrance and then dark wood floors elsewhere. The restaurant seats 175 with eight leather booths that go around the dining room, which has another dozen tables. There's patio seating, as well as a separate room for larger parties.

An elegant wall separates the marble-topped bar from the dining room. The full-bar boasts 18 beers on draft, and the wine list offers a good selection of whites and reds, with almost everything available by the glass.

The menu features several Angus beef options that the staff prepares in a 1,500-degree broiler. The entrees come with a choice of two sides. Cavins pays homage to the restaurant's Southern locale with sides such as Sweet Potato Mash with Maple and Chipotle, Smoked Gouda Cheese Grits, Shoe Peg Corn Pudding, and Black-Eyed Peas an Bean Ragout.

Besides steak and chops, the menu includes fish, duck and chicken.

Preservation is open from 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Happy hour is weekdays until 7 p.m.

(A couple of notes for your first visit: Parking is a little tight, but valet is available on Friday and Saturday nights. And there's no need to go up the stairs. They lead to the kitchen.)
