Settlement for Ex-Library Chief OK'd; the Former Ponte Vedra Branch Director Could Receive $58,549 from County

Hoping to settle a case before it goes to court, St. Johns County commissioners agreed this week to pay the former director of the Ponte Vedra Beach branch library $58,549.

At a commission meeting Tuesday, County Attorney Patrick McCormack asked the commissioners to approve paying the amount to Mary Thomas, and the commissioners voted unanimously to do so.

Thomas's attorney Ada Hammond said Wednesday that Thomas did not yet have a signed agreement with the county, but that she hoped to by the end of this week. She said that upon receipt, she believed Thomas would accept the settlement.

The settlement follows events that started about a year ago. In June, Thomas said her boss, County Library Director Mary Jane Little, came to the Ponte Vedra Beach library and used her position of authority to get employees to sign a petition to put former County Commissioner Karen Stern on the ballot for re-election in November.

A subsequent Florida Division of Elections complaint was dropped due to a lack of evidence. …
