School Squad Runs to Build a Green Future

Blisters and aching limbs will not stop pupils, parents and teachers at a Northumberland school in a run that will mark the first step in a marathon fundraising effort.

The event is being held by Wylam First School to raise cash for a pounds 350,000 environmentally friendly "space to think" building designed by pupils.

Three parents at the school aim to complete the 70 mile run along Hadrian's Wall from Solway to the school, while other pupils and members of staff are completing shorter distances.

Headteacher Lynn Johnston, who is taking part in a five-mile section of the run, said: "We didn't start the project with the aim of actually building it, but the design was so fantastic that it would be a travesty not to build it. We just thought let's go for it.

"It really is the children's building. They have had support from architects and it has been a huge project."

Youngsters at the school were helped by Napper Architects as they put together plans for the facility, which would be solar powered and would include a wind turbine and a wildlife observation area. …
