Grieving friends of a reveller killed in a one-punch attack have told how their pal died over an argument about a thrown chip.

Dean Windle had been out celebrating a friend's birthday when he was allegedly killed by Michael Kennedy.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Windle was felled while trying to apologise to Kennedy after a chip thrown by one of his group hit Kennedy's girlfriend.

But as Mr Windle said sorry and offered to shake the 19-year-old's hand, he lashed out and, prosecutors say, killed him with a single blow.

Mr Windle had been out on the town to mark school friend Mark Sanders's birthday when tragedy struck outside the Subway sandwich shop on Market Street, Newcastle, last November.

Mr Sanders told the court: "It was my birthday the day before and we'd been for a few drinks. We were in an enjoyable mood.

"As we walked past Subway, someone said his girlfriend had been hit with a chip. He said it in an aggressive manner. …
