Lee Clark today praised the Newcastle United players who DID want to play at Vicarage Road to conclude a troublesome week and a troublesome season.

The Toon coach is expected to keep his role as reserve-team boss regardless of who comes in as manager at St James' Park this week, and saw many of his second string regulars in action at Watford.

Indeed Matty Pattison, Alan O'Brien, Peter Ramage and Andy Carroll were all heavily involved in Hertfordshire and with Oba Martin AWOL and Charles N'Zogbia sulking after being dropped, and Clark was grateful to the players who did turn up for the last game of the season.

He told the Chronicle in an honest and open interview: "We picked 16 players who we thought would show commitment and desire to the black-and-white shirt and that is what they did.

"It has been quite a tough week, it is never easy when a manager loses their job.

"I have never enjoyed it throughout my career when a manager goes, especially when you are part of the backroom staff. …
