An office manager stole almost pounds 9,000 from the family-run firm she worked for because she was bitter about the owners using the company's money as a personal account, a court was told yesterday.

Mother-of-two Linda Albert plundered the cash from a medical waste disposal business for more than a year by writing out cheques she pretended were being paid to sub-contractors.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 39-year-old then used the cash to pay her mortgage, give money to her son and to her husband, who used to be a director at the firm.

She told police later she was unhappy at his departure, which she blamed on the father-and-son team who ran the business, called The Durham Company, based in Sunderland.

She also was "bitter and resentful" when she saw the pair taking out money, and felt she should be entitled to some of it as well, even though it was their company and their money, her barrister Katherine Dunn said.

"Foolishly she believed she deserved more money and foolishly she took it," Ms Dunn added. …
