KAUTO STAR predictably swept the board at the Anglo-Irish Jumps Racing Awards at the Cafe Royal in Piccadilly today.

As well as being named Horse of the Year, the Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old was officially announced as being the champion steeplechaser over two miles, two-and-a-half miles, and three-miles-plus a testament to the aggressive way in which he was campaigned during the season.

Clive Smith, the horses owner, also received a cheque for [pounds sterling]150,000 as his part of the prize-money for Kauto Stars victory in the Racing UK Order of Merit.

Kauto Star was officially rated 7lb superior to any other steeplechaser in training at the end of the campaign, having been given an official rating of 179 in the final classifications.

Exotic Dancer, second to Kauto Star in the Totesport Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March, finished next-highest on 172, while Sublimity and Hardy Eustace were controversially rated as joint-champion two-mile hurdlers, despite the former comprehensively beating that rival into fourth place in the Champion Hurdle. …
