Darlington are on the verge of signing their second commanding central defender of the week, with news that Steve Foster has quit League One Champions Scunthorpe to head north.

If the deal goes through it will be a major signing, for Foster has turned down the chance of Championship football to skipper Darlington in League Two.

The Gazette understands that both clubs offered a two-year deal to the 32-year-old defender, but Darlington boss Dave Penney has thrown in the lure of the skipper's armband.

After capturing ex-Boro man Alan White, Penney immediately set about securing the services of Foster, who was with him at Doncaster.

A Scunthorpe source today told the Gazette: "Foster was Scunthorpe player of the season, and they were very keen to keep him. It was a shock to everyone when he turned down the deal.

"But I believe that he has been offered better terms and the captaincy at Darlington. …
