Are aspects of your daily life driving you crazy because you are constantly confronting things that could be done differently and better?

Have you ever asked why we should live in a community where it's a nightmare getting from A to B because bus timetables are confusing and difficult to read?

Or, why isn't cycling to school safer if children are being encouraged to take their bikes? Or why should saving energy cost us more money than we can afford? You are not alone because all over the region, people are working on projects within schools, health, food, travel, energy and tourism that need improving. Together with designers they are coming up with practical, working solutions to make positive changes in their daily lives.

Dott 07 (Designs of the time 2007) is behind this year of community projects, events and exhibitions. The thinking behind Dott 07 is simple.

As members of the public, we know certain services could be better but we just have no idea how to go about improving them. Dott 07 is bringing designers and people in the region together to explore sustainable alternatives to specific areas of poor design and to identify new design actions that will bring those alternative solutions closer.

Solutions to the many issues raised by the Dott 07 projects are already taking shape in and around the region. Thousands of school children are currently involved in a carbon foot-printing exercise as part of the Eco Design Challenge schools project.

In Scremerston village, a group of designers is working with the community to co-design transport solutions. Walker Technology College in Newcastle is co-designing a better school while dozens of designers are identifying ways of developing profitable but sustainable tourism in the region.

A group of over 120 designers, academics and healthcare professionals are identifying practical steps that need to be taken to improve the lives of people with Alzheimer's while in Middlesbrough the Dott 07 Urban Farming team is working with more than 1,000 citizens to grow food all over the town, bringing locally-grown produce into the centre of city life. …
