The London Olympics may still be some five years away, but rising star Danny Reed has already set his sights on the big occasion.

Beijing 2008 may have come a little too early for the 17-year-old from Ormesby Table Tennis Club, but he will be among the medal contenders when the greatest sports show on earth hits the capital in a little over 60 months time.

Danny says that while he and the rest of the team are fully aware of what is expected of them in five years' time, he also feels he must not allow the hype to go to his head.

He said: "You have got to recognise the expectation otherwise it will just build up. We've got a psychologist and I have spoken to him about it, and he said I've just got to not think of 2012 as the be all and end all.

"And, that it is important to look beyond that also, otherwise the pressure will just build up so much that when we eventually turn up in London, there is a big danger we could fail.

"A medal in London would be an absolute dream - and I think we've got a great chance of achieving that, in the team event especially.

"It's probably the only opportunity we will ever get to play in an Olympic Games on home soil, and the experience will last a lifetime.

"But with that said, I don't want to go unless I believe I can do well and be able to compete - but I believe I can do it, and I'm going to keep on working hard to make sure that happens."

Early 2007 has already seen Reed make a rapid breakthrough on the circuit.

In March, he was selected for the European Senior Championships in Belgrade and although the trip was a disappointing one overall for Team England, he says he took a lot from it.

Danny said: "For me, it was an amazing experience because it was my first major taste of a big senior event and just witnessing the level you've got to get to for the Olympics. …
