Gareth Southgate has refused to impose a deadline on completing his summer spending spree.

While the Boro faithful are understandably keen to see the much heralded dressing room shake-up get under way as soon as possible, the manager is realistic about the prospects of an immediate infusion of new blood.

Hibs midfielder Scott Brown was a potential early capture, but he plumped for Celtic ahead of Rangers, Middlesbrough and Reading.

But waiting patiently for targets to emerge and then sign has always been an important attribute for Boro managers.

Steve McClaren made a number of last-minute captures in the summer and winter windows, including Gaizka Mendieta, Bolo Zenden, Chris Riggott, Malcolm Christie and Danny Mills.

And Southgate followed suit by signing Jonathan Woodgate late in the day last summer and Robert Huth went right to the wire.

"It's impossible to know how quickly these things will happen," Southgate told the Gazette.

"I would like get the people I want in as soon as possible so they are here for pre-season.

"But teams want to hang on to their best players.

"As long as there is time left in the window, transfers will take place.

"Negotiations can take a while but we are being proactive.

"We are being proactive with a couple of potential signings, while other players we are still monitoring."

As Southgate goes on to point out, the season isn't even over for some clubs and the outcome of the play-offs could affect who does, and doesn't become available.

Former target Zoltan Gera is currently featuring for West Brom, who beat Wolves last night to reach the play-off finals.

The Hungarian is a player Boro are keeping tabs on and could yet make a new bid for once the season is completed. …
