Retired Educator's Service Honored; Carolyn Pfohl Receives Friday Musicale Music Education Award

Friday Musicale is honoring a longtime music supervisor for Duval County and St. Augustine schools for her service to music education.

A presentation of the Music Educators Award for Distinguished Service and Superior Leadership was made April 20 to Carolyn Day Pfohl by Friday Musicale President Jennie Lee Dunnington, who unveiled a wall plaque that has places for names of future recipients. A framed certificate of recognition was presented to Pfohl.

Several Friday Musicale members told those who had gathered for the presentation and a preceding piano concert by University of North Florida music professor D. Gary Smart that Pfohl helped make Jacksonville "a national leader in school orchestra instruction."

After graduating from Alabama College in 1940 and getting a master's degree in music from Columbia University, she returned to Alexander City, Ala., to help manage the family farms after her father's death, according to a biography provided by Friday Musicale. While there, she organized and conducted a junior high school chorus and substituted for teachers, the biography said. …
